Building Horizons for Children Who Were Told They Had None
There are children right now sitting outside classrooms in Nakivale Refugee Settlement.
Not because they don’t want to learn.
Not because their parents don’t care.
But because the system that once supported them is collapsing. I know this place. I grew up in it.
I know what it feels like to have no school to go to.
I know what it does to a child to be forgotten.
Horizons Coalition exists to make sure they are not.

"I was born at a border crossing. My mother fled Rwanda while in labor. I spent 27 years as a refugee in camps, in hiding, in five displacements across Uganda and Rwanda. I know what it means to have no school to go to. I know what it costs a child to lose that. I know what it means to a parent watching it happen. These are not statistics to me. They are my people." Dr. Jean de Dieu 'Yohana' Ndahiriwe, Founder, Horizons Coalition · Former Child Refugee, Rwanda Genocide against the Tutsi Survivor.
WHY THIS MATTERS
The world is shifting, and refugee children are paying the price.
Uganda hosts nearly 2 million refugees.
More than half are children.
And today, more than half of those children are out of school.Food aid has been cut.
Funding has been withdrawn.
Classrooms are overcrowded beyond imagination.Children are not waiting. They are falling behind.
These numbers represent human beings, each with a name, a story, and untapped potential to contribute to solutions.
What We Do
We don’t build programs from a distance.
We build from inside the story.
Horizons Coalition is launching an elementary education initiative in Nakivale to serve 200 children in its first phase.
This is not theory.
This is direct, measurable, life-changing work.We provide:
Education access
School materials and uniforms
Daily feeding support
Trauma-informed care
Parent engagement and accountability
This is where traditional approaches fail and where survivor-centered models transform lives.
