About us

A Story That Did Not End in a Refugee Camp

I was born in a place that doesn’t appear on maps.

Between borders. Between nations. Between identities.

My mother was fleeing violence. She went into labor along the way. That is where my life began.

I spent 27 years as a refugee.

Five displacements. Camps across Uganda. Loss that no child should have to carry.

And yet, I stand today not as a victim of that story, but as a witness to what is possible when someone refuses to let it end there.

Horizons Coalition was not created out of theory.
It was born out of memory.

These children in Nakivale are not statistics to me.

They are my people.

Why This Work Is Different

There are many organizations working in refugee spaces.

Very few are led by someone who has lived it.

  • I grew up in the same system we are now working to strengthen

  • I understand the language, the culture, the pain, and the hope

  • I bring together lived experience, academic training, and leadership practice

This is what makes Horizons Coalition different.

We are not outsiders trying to help.

We are insiders building forward.

The difference you’ll experience, Build Camp Hope for Refugees to dream again.

"Amid declining aid, direct investment in Refugee-Led Organizations presents a viable opportunity to move into a new era of the humanitarian apparatus. These are the organizations donors should be seeking out." Refugees International, July 2025.

Partnership for Impact

We Don’t Work Alone

This work is built through partnership.

On the ground, we align with organizations already serving Nakivale.

Globally, we invite individuals, churches, and institutions to step into meaningful impact.

This is Bigger, than a single refugee Camp or Settlement

Because this is a moment of transition.

Large systems are shrinking.

Survivor-led organizations are rising.

And those who step in now become part of something that will define the next generation of humanitarian work.

Who We Work With

  • Local school systems

  • International education organizations

  • Faith communities

  • Individual donors

This Is Bigger Than One Settlement

Nakivale is where we begin.

But this is not where we end.

The Vision

To build a model of education, healing, and empowerment that can be replicated across refugee communities.

The Long-Term Goal

  • Expand across Uganda

  • Build partnerships across East Africa

  • Create a global network of refugee-led transformation

Why This Works

Because it is built on truth.

Lived experience.
Community trust.
Leadership shaped by adversity.
